A mobile card game for the botanical world—rewilding attention from screen to soil.

PLATE I

the App’s philosophy

To the untrained eye, plants often disappear into the background. Some are lauded as things to eat, smell, or ornament a garden with, but most are dismissed without a second thought - a vast swath of wild, nondescript “green”. But when the eye learns to see what they hide, to notice each as a subject of an ancient oft-forgotten Kingdom, a world of magic, competition, and wisdom appears, a Kingdom whose name is Plantae.

Bioregion’s plant-ID technology transforms you into an archivist of this Kingdom’s past, present, and future. By scanning a plant in the real world, you are rewarded with its plant card in your archive. With thousands of cards to collect, each carrying a different story of the Kingdom and a different ecological power, you will never see plants the same way again.

PLATE II

from the founders

a different way of noticing

a note from our team

We built bioregion out of an observation: most people move through landscapes without ever really seeing them. At one point, this had been true for each of us on the developing team…until something shifted our attention.

In daily life in the 21st century, plants become relegated to background noise. Ecosystems flatten into scenery. The living world becomes something we pass through, rather than something we participate in.

Bioregion is an attempt to shift that. To move from a routine where plant life is ignored, to a life that is immersive in our home ecosystems. Enriched by the non-human communities we share.

The app turns ecosystems into interactive systems—places where you can notice, identify, and engage with what’s already there (what has already been there for thousands of years). Whether because of urban planning or the bustling pace of modern responsibilities, we know that it is not always possible to actively embed within nonhuman worlds. Our hope is that Bioregion creates an interface for daily attention to plants; making it easy to find parks near you and know which plants inhabit them, having an enclosed and collectable set of integral plant communities to know in your region, and creating community around the recognition of plants.

The goal isn’t just to learn how to ID and name a plant, it is to build a different kind of attention…slower, more relational, and deeply rooted in place.

Once you start seeing this way, your home doesn’t look the same.
